    Description

One of the great things about our hobby is that you can find something like this, from the country's early history, that's over 175 years old and it doesn't cost an arm-and-a-leg. It's a 7/8" brass or bronze (some heavy metal) presidential campaign token/medal promoting the famous military hero, General William Henry Harrison. This has graphics on the reverse showing a set of scales. In the pans are "Democrat" and "Whig," with the former (incumbent U.S. president Martin van Buren) found wanting in the balance. In 1840, Harrison became the first Whig Party president, only this county's ninth chief executive.  But he also had the shortest time in office - barely a month - 31 days. Born in 1773, when inaugurated on March 4, 1841, he was, for those days, quite an old man of 68.  And he made an overly-long Inaugural Address in bad weather outside, without a winter coat.  So he caught a cold, developed pneumonia and died.  His military record had made him the ideal, plain-spoken hero, even though he had served in politics for decades. But this myth was because of his handlers and the birth of a new genre in America; political publicity.  His various campaign slogans and logos are plastered on countless items, including the famous log cabin on many of his items. This
is in nice shape but please enlarge our images to judge its condition for yourself so you can be happy with your purchase.  Remember, it's over 175 years old, so it's not supposed to be perfect.
